Newington is well situated for convenient access to hospitals, senior services, day care services and other health related services. Medical services in the Newington area are comprehensive.

Beginning July 1, 2006 , the Town of Newington will be a member of the Central Connecticut Health District (CCHD), which will serve as the local health department for residents in Newington , Berlin , Rocky Hill, and Wethersfield . As such, the Health District is committed to providing essential local public health services through on-going education, prevention of diseases, investigation of health problems, the protection and enhancement of the environmental health of the community, monitoring, and advocacy.

Between 1898 and 1996 Newington was the home of the Children's Hospital which consolidated with the pediatric services at Hartford Hospital and is now known as the Connecticut Children's Medical Center . Hartford Hospital maintains a campus in Newington providing services that includes the

•  Jefferson House providing rehabilitative, palliative and long-term care;
•  Various administrative offices (in the former Newington Children's Hospital);
•  Clinical Laboratory Partners which performs the hospital's diagnostic tests;
•  Cedar Mountain Commons independent and assisted living community.

The VA Connecticut Healthcare System (formerly known as the Newington VA Hospital) has been part of the Newington landscape since 1931. The facility has served veterans through World War I and II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War and continues to serve all qualified veterans of the most recent conflicts.

Library Services

The mission statement of the Lucy Robbins Welles Library is to provide information, education, and cultural enrichment for the Newington community through a commitment to excellence in library services. The Library efforts to achieve its goal is recognized by its statewide recognition – in 2005 it was ranked 2nd compared to other State libraries serving populations of 25,000 and 7th overall throughout Connecticut (in the prior year it was ranked 14th).

The Library has an enviable collection and keeps pace with technology – public use computers, computerized databases, internet access and WIFI are available. It also offers extensive programs for pre-schoolers to adults ranging from children's story hours to cooking classes. The Reference Staff is knowledgeable and supportive of the business community.

The library offers online resources you can access from work or home. Magazine and newspaper articles, telephone directories and links to web sites grouped by subject are just a sample of what's available.  You can get reliable information about companies and other businesses, tradeshows, Connecticut licensing requirements, federal taxes and much more through the library's own web site.

An Award of Merit was recently presented to the Library and Newington Public Schools for their outstanding partnership for the 2005 summer reading program. The Library continually seeks innovative ways to support the community.
