Historical Houses

The Newington Historical Society & Trust, Inc. operates both the Kellogg-Eddy House and the Enoch Kelsey House. Times and dates are subject to change without notice. For more information, visit the Historical Society's website.

The Kellogg-Eddy House
679 Willard Avenue

The house was built in 1808 by General Martin Kellogg. It is a typical New England Georgian-style house with some Greek Revival influences and a good example of the home of an affluent farm family of that era. The north parlor has elaborate hand-carved woodwork.

Enoch Kelsey House
1702 Main Street

This home contains unique and rare, freehand painted wall decorations. It is an excellent example of a residence of a prosperous Connecticut farmer and tinsmith in the late 18th century.

The Deming Young Farm
282 Church Street

The Deming Young Farm Foundation is overseeing the renovation of the farmhouse built by Thomas Deming in 1784. The house sits on 54 acres that was owned by the Deming family since 1671, when Newington was still part of Wethersfield . In 1918, Fred Young bought the land for farming and passed it on to his son who died in 1990. With the threat of developers wanting to parcel up the land, the town of Newington bought it in 1998.

The Deming Young Farm Foundation was created in April 2001 to save the farmhouse from being demolished as an eyesore, and is responsible for the renovation of the farmhouse. The Foundation's volunteers have uncovered multiple fireplaces, a beehive stove, a funeral door (a door to remove a corpse after the memorial service), and a sparking bench (a place where young men and women would court). The goal is to have the Deming House become a learning center for how an 18th century farm family lived.

Of note, a group of bluebird boxes maintained by the Newington Chapter of the Connecticut Bluebird Restoration Project and Newington's community gardens are now located at the farm. Visit the Foundation's website.

Old Firehouse No. 1
1161 Main Street

The old firehouse located on Main Street was built in 1919 and recently restored through the efforts of volunteers and Town support. The historic building is architecturally interesting with old fashioned bi-fold doors, entry center arches and columns. The building currently houses antique fire fighting equipment.

There are a number of other historical homes in town which are private residences and not open to the public.
