ECONOMICS

Newington works as a community. The Town has its historic roots in the farming and dairy industries.  Its pleasant suburban setting, appealing amenities and close proximity to major employment centers offer a delightful family living atmosphere.

In addition to the local shops of Newington Center , the Berlin Turnpike (Routes 5 and 15) is an extensive stretch of commercial enterprises which offer virtually every product and service imaginable, and more plazas are under construction. The Department of Transportation and Northeast Utilities complexes are also on the Berlin Turnpike.

Newington offers an array of industrial parks – two owned by the Town and eight privately owned. Additionally, there are also a number of professional office parks within the Town. It's a great place to live and an excellent place to do business.

Businesses in Newington can find support from the local town government. The Façade Rehabilitation Loan Program was created by the Newington Town Council as a resource to improve the appearance and economic vitality of commercial properties. The façade program is funded by local appropriations, or if available from State of Connecticut economic development grants.

Façade “Program Policies and Procedures” were adopted by the Town Council in February 2003.  The Council identified the Town Center business district as its first priority area for loan funds.  In conjunction with the Façade policies and procedures the Council endorsed the Town Center Design Guidelines, adopted by the Newington Town Plan and Zoning Commission, December 7, 2000, as the criteria for projects receiving loan funds.

The Commercial Façade Easement Rehabilitation Loan Committee has been appointed by the Town Council to oversee the operations of this program, evaluate and select properties applying for loans.  Project administration and management are the responsibility of the Town Planner.  An on-call architectural firm has been appointed by the Town Council to provide design assistance and coordinate with the Town Planner project bidding and contract administration.

In fiscal year 2004-05, two façade loans, totaling $346,100 were awarded.  The approved projects, 1018 to 1046 Main Street (Carvel's to Chamber of Commerce) resulted in façade renovations to 250 feet of storefront, affecting eight businesses.  Coincident with the façade loan renovations the Town used a $400,000 STEAP (Small Town Economic Assistance Program) grant to make 600' of streetscape improvements, new granite curbs, brick pavers, reconstruction of landscape planters, ornamental lighting and benches that compliment this very visible area of the central business district.

The town is served by the following utilities: Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P), Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG), Metropolitan District Commission (MDC), AT&T and Cox Communications. Links for these utilities can be found on the Chamber's Link Page.
